Educators at the University of Saskatchewan make decisions about how artificial intelligence (AI) is considered within their courses, including how it may be used in teaching and assessment, or whether it is used at all.
These decisions are based on course outcomes, instructional approaches, and learning goals. This page provides guidance to support those decisions, including how to communicate expectations clearly with students to support shared understanding and responsible use.
AI may not be relevant in all courses. In some cases, current approaches already align with course expectations. In others, awareness of how AI is used may help reduce uncertainty in how student work is produced and evaluated.
Ethical and responsible use
AI use in teaching and learning raises ethical and professional considerations related to student work, assessment, and transparency.
- Attend to equity and diversity: You should encourage searching for diverse knowledges and caution that AI outputs are subject to inequities.
- Promote openness and transparency You should demonstrate transparent use of AI by acknowledging its uses where appropriate and fostering a culture of openness where students are encouraged to ask questions and disclose AI use (see more information on citing ).
- Protect intellectual property: You should not input students’ intellectual property into AI tools. You should avoid submitting content that is not their own into any AI tool that uses inputs for training purposes or to improve performance. When using AI tools, you are responsible for the content you submit and complying with all applicable laws, research ethics, and regulations.

Certain aspects of AI use are governed by university policies and institutional guidelines. These may apply in specific situations depending on your course requirements or the type of work being completed.
Literacy
AI literacy supports informed decision-making about how AI may be evaluated, applied, and discussed in teaching, learning, and assessment.
- Familiarize yourself: You should familiarize yourself with the fundamentals of AI, including its benefits, limitations, and potential applications, as well as its social, cultural, and ethical implications.
- Task-specific use: You should promote the use of specific AI tools for specific tasks in teaching and learning and integrate authentic uses of AI given your discipline.
- Keep current: You should be aware of AI usage and its impact in relevant industry and community contexts (see more on prompting).
Change and innovation in instruction and assessment
AI may influence how instruction, learning outcomes, and assessment are designed and adapted.
- Find balance: You should guide learners in using AI tools and developing their own creative and critical thinking skills. Focus on uniquely human abilities in learning outcomes, instruction, and assessment.
- Set expectations: You should discuss expectations with learners about appropriate AI use and its impact on learning, including accountability for any use of AI output, and disclosing AI use.
- Responsibility: You are responsible for assessing student work, feedback quality, and establishing student grades, although you can be supported by AI.
- Consistency: You should collaborate within your program to apply concise and consistent expectations for use of AI.
Managing tool use
Decisions about AI tools should reflect instructional goals, learner needs, and institutional requirements related to privacy, security, and responsible use.
- Tool approval and recommendation: You should prioritize using AI tools approved by USask to protect equity, safety, and security. When functionality needs for your course are better met by unapproved tools, you should recommend new tools to be reviewed.
- Weigh implications: You should weigh implications for student learning needs (including accommodation), course outcomes, and assessment security if you are considering banning the use of AI for an assessment. Seek guidance about best practices before making decision about how to secure your assessments.
